an explanation

My current body of work stems in part from an interest in extracting segments from more famous works of art, stripping them from the context of their intended purpose and injecting them into a different world. These Pieces of data are removed and analyzed to determine what function they will play in my scenario. There are references to artists such as Hans Hoffman in the way I apply thick impasto swatches of paint to form my characters. In another piece, brightly colored Morris Louis stripes pop up in otherwise dull and earth toned surroundings. These Elements have been pulled apart, reattached and thrust into a world that is at times self referential delivering a witty dialog between the extractions and the "characters" that have evolved within the story. My inspiration for each of these paintings is derived from pop culture and issues such as self worth, loneliness, fear of rejection and elitism.
